Review – O.G. Ocean’s Eleven

For some reason, there is an “Oceans Eleven” film series on cable this weekend.  The original “Ocean’s Eleven” released in 1960, then the remake, then it’s two sequels (“Oceans 12” and “Oceans 13”) and the spinoff movie with all females (“Oceans 8”) in a row.

I haven’t seen the original “Ocean’s Eleven” in a long time, so I decided to rewatch it.  Danny Ocean (Frank Sinatra) gets together with some of his former paratrooper buddies including Sam Harmon (Dean Martin), Jimmy Foster (Peter Lawford), Mushy O’Connors (Joey Bishop), and Josh Howard (Sammy Davis Jr) to rob 5 Las Vegas casinos on New Years Eve.  Those 5 guys were known as the “Rat Pack”.  At the very end of this movie you can see their 5 names on a casino marquee.

If you’ve seen the remake but not the original, I recommend seeing the original because the storyline is completely different.  For example: unlike the remake, they rob 5 different casinos (instead of 1 vault) – Flamingo, Sahara, Desert Inn, Riviera, and Sands.  2 guys at each casino.  You can learn a little more about the movie in the trailer at this link.

There are some funny cameos in this movie including Red Skelton (playing himself) and Shirley MacLaine (NOT playing herself).

Except for some scenes with people singing (Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr) which I could have done without and a lit bit of racism and sexism in the movie, I really enjoy it.

Overall – 8 out of 10.
