saidi’s take – 8/31/2026

Hello everyone,

This post is dedicated to Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, and Shelley Fabares who all passed away last week.  Dolly Parton was the most well-known for her singing career but she also starred in in “9 to 5”, “Steel Magnolias”, and other movies (some of which have been re-released in theaters this past weekend).  Tim Curry is mostly known for his starring role in the cult classic “Rocky Horror Picture Show” but he’s done several other movies, Shelley Fabares is mostly known for costarring in a few Elvis Presley movies like “Clambake” and “Girl Happy”

In the two weeks that I was away, the only news was from “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” (now the #1 movie of 2026 both domestic and worldwide) and “The Odyssey” (now the #2 movie of 2026 both domestic and worldwide).  Other notable records…..

  • “Spider-Man Brand New Day” was the FASTEST MOVIE TO PASS $700 MILLION at the domestic box office.
  • “Spider-Man Brand New Day” $71 million was the second-best 3rd domestic weekend ever.
  • “Spider-Man Brand New Day” was the second-best movie to pass $2 BILLION at the worldwide box office.
  • “Spider-Man Brand New Day” was the FASTEST MOVIE TO PASS $800 MILLION at the domestic box office – 19 days.
  • “The Odyssey” is the BIGGEST R RATED MOVIE AT THE WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE (“Deadpool Vs Wolverine” is still #1 at the domestic box office).

BOX OFFICE: After 5 weekends, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is STILL the #1 movie at the domestic box office and is STILL PLAYING ON MORE SCREENS THAN ANY OTHER MOVIE (3678 – down 328 screens this past weekend).  It made $22.5 million this weekend which means it’s domestic total is approaching $900 million.  That makes it the #2 MOVIE OF ALL TIME AT THE DOMESTIC BOX OFFICE.  It’s only about $40 million behind the #1 MOVIE OF ALL TIME AT THE DOMESTIC BOX OFFICE (“Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” at $936 million). The #2 movie was the movie that wasn’t going to be released for awhile “Coyote Vs Acme” with $15.9 million (in about 100 less theaters than “Spider-Man”).  #3 is still “The Odyssey” which was #2 until the weekend before last and is now holding steady at #3.  It’s domestic total is $563.8 million which puts it at #19 on the all-time domestic box office list.  #4 was last weeks #2 movie “Insidious Out of the Further” which made $10.2 million.  Last week the #1 and #2 movies were both from Sony Pictures.

This weekend’s total domestic box office has gone down around 20% each of the last 3 weeks.  This past weekend it was down 23.6% to $100 million.

As of this weekend, the total domestic box office is THIS CLOSE to topping the ALL-TIME DOMESTIC SUMMER BOX OFFICE RECORD.  It’s currently at $4.598 BILLION with 1 week to go.  The ALL TIME RECORD is $4.756 BILLION.

WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE:  The international box office total for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey” is now fairly close – $66.2 million for “Spider-Man” and $62.9 million for “Odyssey”, but due to the domestic box office their worldwide totals are far apart.  “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” now has $2.33 BILLION making it the #4 MOVIE OF ALL TIME AT THE WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE.  “The Odyssey” is at $1.55 BILLION making it the #14 movie of all time at the worldwide box office. 

OTHER NEWS:

  • AMC Theaters is now in the theatrical distribution business.  It created the distribution company “Leawood Films”
  • They just announced a sequel to the movie “Days of Thunder” with Tom Cruise reprising his role and Anne Hathaway signed on to costar.  The movie will be released in 2028.
  • The Brad Pitt movie that is a spinoff movie for the “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood” character Cliff Booth coming at the end of this year has now been renamed “The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth”
  • AMC Theaters announced their 2nd biggest multiplex in New York City – Kips Bay 15 – will close at the end of the year “…the theatre will close following the property owner’s decision to exercise its contractual right to terminate the theatre’s lease before its scheduled expiration”
