I’ve said it before. Movie theaters are NEVER GOING AWAY because they’re the ONLY WAY for a single movie to make UP TO $1 BILLION IN A WEEKEND. “Spider-Man Brand New Day” proved that this past weekend.
BOX OFFICE: “Spider-Man Brand New Day” blew past all predictions to be the BIGGEST OPENING WEEKEND BOX OFFICE OF ALL TIME WITH $360 MILLION. It started with the BIGGEST “SINGLE DAY” BOX OFFICE OF ALL TIME on Friday when it made $169 million (technically it made that on Thursday night previews and Friday). No other movie has made that much IN IT’S ENTIRE OPENING WEEKEND since “Deadpool & Wolverine” opened in July 2024. “Spider-Man” managed to break the single day and weekend domestic box office records WITHOUT PLAYING IN ANY IMAX SCREENS. Unlike “The Odyssey”, this movie even sold-out regular digital theaters.
Speaking of “The Odyssey”, it held up well although now it’s pretty much only playing on IMAX screens. It made $51 million which is 43% less than its previous weekend. It’s now at almost $400 million which makes it the #3 movie of 2026 at the domestic box office so far. “Spider-Man Brand New Day” is right behind it and will probably pass it sometime this week.
Thanks to “Spider-Man” and “The Odyssey” this past weekend was the BIGGEST DOMESTIC BOX OFFICE EVER with $437 million which is up almost 200% from the previous weeks box office.
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: It didn’t break the record for biggest worldwide opening weekend (still “Avengers: Endgame” with $1.2 BILLION opening weekend), but “Spider-Man Brand New Day” did blew past all predictions making a worldwide total of $932 million on its opening weekend which makes it the #4 movie of 2026 worldwide. The 3 movies above it have all made over $1 billion worldwide this year. The “Spider-Man” total in 3 days is already more than “The Odyssey” has made in the 3 weeks it’s been open (“The Odyssey” worldwide total is currently at $912 million). “Spider-Man” was able to play in IMAX in China and Japan because “The Odyssey” isn’t open in those countries yet.
This past weekend was also the BIGGEST WORLDWIDE WEEKEND EVER.
OTHER NEWS:
- Thanks to “The Odyssey”, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie”, and “Michael” (which Universal released internationally), Universal zoomed past Disney to be the first studio to make over $4 BILLION WORLDWIDE.
- This past week, “The Odyssey” made more than the TOTAL DOMESTIC BOX OFFICE OF “Oppenheimer”. In a couple weeks, it should pass $1 BILLION which is more than the total worldwide box office for “Oppenheimer”. It might even pass “The Dark Knight Rises” ($1.085 BILLION) to become Christopher Nolan’s biggest movie ever.
- In an interview with “Spider-Man” producer Amy Pascal, she mentioned that the announcement for the next actor who will be playing James Bond might be around the end of this year.
- Right after “Spider-Man Brand New Day” became the biggest opening weekend at the domestic box office ever WITHOUT PLAYING ON IMAX SCREENS, IMAX quickly announced that some digital IMAX screens will be playing “Spider-Man” starting this Friday (Aug 7) since their commitment to showing “The Odyssey” is done. However, the 70mm IMAX screens will continue to play “The Odyssey” until at least the end of August.
LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR:
Imagine if “I Play Rocky” wins any awards there could be another movie where an actor…plays a real person who is an actor (Anthony Ippolito)….playing a real person who is an actor (Sylvester Stallone)….playing a fictional person (Rocky).
