saidi’s take – 4/15/2026

Hello everyone,

FIRST THING: This week is the annual “CinemaCon” movie theater convention in Las Vegas where most movie studios showcase their upcoming summer movies.  If there is any big news from CinemaCon I may have a special news item later this week.

Also, this year’s CinemaCon may be overloaded with wrestling fans because the annual “WrestleMania” will be in Las Vegas this coming weekend and they often have events during the week before.

BOX OFFICE: “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” continued to lead the box office with $68 million (which is more than some other movies opening weekend).  Its domestic total is now $307 million which makes it the #1 movie at the domestic box office for 2026 so far.  “Project Hail Mary” was second with $24 million which is down only 24% (“The Super Mario Galaxy” movie went down 48%).  The biggest new movie was Universals “You, Me, and Tuscany” which was #4 with $7.7 million.

The total domestic box office made went down approx. 37% from the previous weekend with $125 million

WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” also continued to lead the international box office.  Its worldwide total is now $628 million so it’s just behind the Chinese movie “Pegasus 3” which is currently the #1 movie of 2026 worldwide.  “Pegasus 3” is at $641 million and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is at $629 million worldwide.  “Project Hail Mary” is also still doing well worldwide but it’s lagging the other two with $510 million worldwide.

OTHER NEWS:

  • Both Sony Pictures and Walt Disney Studios announced layoffs recently.  Disney is estimated to lay off about 1000 employees at the first cost cutting of the new CEO Josh Amaro.  Sony Pictures said it will lay off “a few hundred” in what they say is “targeted and strategic, and not a mere cost-cutting exercise.”
  • Today, over 1000 filmmakers and actors signed a letter opposing the Paramount/Warner Bros merger.  They say “The integrity, independence, and diversity of our industry would be grievously compromised.”
  • As mentioned at the top, if there is any CinemaCon news I will give a news update this week or next Monday.

LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR: Apparently the newest trend for movie theaters is the themed Popcorn/Soda containers.  They seem to be making them for any big movie release these days…

…but they don’t seem to be thinking too hard on what to make them.  The “Devil Wears Prada 2” popcorn bucket is a purse.  “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” popcorn bucket is Yoshi.  Those probably took a couple seconds for someone to think up.
