saidi’s take – 1/30/2024

Hello everyone,

BOX OFFICE: There was a competition for #1 this past weekend but there really wasn’t what you would call a “winner” since none of the movies made over $7 million at the domestic box office.  “Mean Girls” came out at #1 with $6.9 million and “The Beekeeper” was close behind it with $6.68 million.  The total domestic box office is down over 16% lower than the previous weekend so it’s the new lowest weekend for 2024 so far.  However, there was a little bit of good news.  “Wonka” – which is still doing fairly well and is at #3 on the domestic box office is approaching $200 million total domestically.

Some Academy Award nominated movies got a bump in the number of screens they’re playing on and their total domestic box office.  “Poor Things” was in about 900 more screens and its box office went up almost 37% from the previous week moving it from #10 to #6 in the domestic top 10, “American Fiction” was in approx. 800 more screens and the box office went up 48% – putting it up to #9 of the weekend box office., “The Zone of Interest” went from 87 screens to 317 and its box office went up 142% , “Oppenheimer” played in over 1000 more screens and the box office went over 255% percent, “The Holdovers” went from 30 screens to almost 1300 screens and it’s box office went up over 538%, and “Anatomy of a Fall” went from 25 screens to 380 screens and its box office rose almost 400%.  The biggest Academy Award jump was “Killers of the Flower Moon” which went from 16 to 925 screens and its box office went up an AMAZING 2900%.  However, the biggest jump was for a movie that DIDN’T receive any Academy Award nominations.  According to reports, the horror movie “Thanksgiving” jumped from 3 theaters to 511 theaters and its box office jumped OVER 92 THOUSAND PERCENT from just $92 to over $85 thousand.

WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: The worldwide box office did as poorly as the domestic box office but there was a few positive notes.  “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” was the top movie in foreign markets making $30 million in foreign countries.  Also, the Disney animated movie “Wish” is doing well internationally.  It has only made $63 million domestically but it’s at approx. $150 million international so it’s worldwide now passed $200 million.

OTHER NEWS:  The trailer for the “Road House” remake premiered last week and at the same time Doug Liman, the director of the movie, wrote his own column on “Deadline.com” saying that he was boycotting the promotion of the movie.  According to him, the studio first told him that the movie would have a wide theatrical release but right now it’s currently only scheduled to play in a few theaters and on Amazon Prime when it’s released in March.  This is somewhat odd because around the same time Amazon/MGM announced details about a few movies they’re going to release including “My Old Ass” (recently shown at Sundance), “Blink Twice”, and “Levon’s Trade”.  They say that all those movies will have a wide theatrical release.

Although the Super Bowl is still 2 weeks away, the commercials for upcoming movies during the football games has already started with the playoffs game this past weekend.  The first trailer for “Despicable Me 4” premiered during one of the playoff games and the upcoming “Kung Fu Panda 4” was an advertising sponsor for one of the games.

LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR:

Someone please make this movie.  I will be first in line to see it.
