Hello everyone,
- This past weekend, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3” retained the #1 spot on the domestic box office with $62 million making its domestic total a little less than $215 million. That’s a better 2nd weekend at the domestic box office than “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania“ earlier this year. It went down only about 48% (the other movie went down almost 70% on its second weekend). At #2 “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” made another $12.5 million on it’s second weekend. It’s domestic box office now stands at $535 million. The best new movie opening was “Book Club: The Next Chapter” with approx. $6.7 million. I believe they were hoping for a lot of mothers to come to the movie for Mothers Day, but it didn’t do that well.
- “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3” was also #1 worldwide with a global total of approx. $530 million. That’s just shy of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” domestic total. The worldwide box office for that movie passed $1.2 BILLION. It’s now the 4th highest animated movie EVER.
- Some people are guessing that “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” could be the top movie of 2023 since the busy summer movie season has started. With a blockbuster movie coming out almost every weekend until August, there won’t be much room for another movie catch up to it. Right now, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3” worldwide box office is less than half.
- Although the movie is still doing well, it looks like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is sticking with its home video schedule. It’s scheduled to be available on pay-per-view video this week, which is just 40 days after it’s theatrical release. It’s similar to the streaming of “Air” on Amazon Prime which was released in theaters on the same day and released on Amazon Prime last week.
- This week is the start of the Cannes film festival which will include the world premiere of a lot of upcoming movies including “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”, Pixars “Elemental”, Wes Andersons “Asteroid City”, Todd Haynes “May December”, and Martin Scorseses “Killers of the Flower Moon”.
Little bit of humor….

A few days ago, Vin Diesel implied that the upcoming “Fast X” is the first of a THREE PART movie. So, I guess they don’t need a book. They can strech ANYTHING into 3 movies. Next, they may say that “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” will have a part 3 and a part 4.
