saidi’s take – 4/11/23

Hello everyone,

Box Office:

  • While people were making jokes about the “Super Mario Bros Movie” movie and complaining that Chris Pratt’s voice isn’t like Marios, the filmmakers were laughing all the way to the bank because it SHATTERED BOX OFFICE RECORDS.  It made a record $146 million over the weekend and an INCREDIBLE almost $205 million since it opened last Wednesday.  That’s the highest opening weekend in 2023 (so far), the highest 5-day (Wed – Sun) opening weekend EVER, and the 2nd highest domestic opening weekend of an animated movie ever (after “Incredibles 2”) – it also broke some World Wide records (see below).

“Air” also beat expectations with approx. $14.45 million over the weekend and $20.2 million since it opened last Wednesday.  It was ALMOST #2 for the weekend (“John Wick 4” made $14.46 million) but John Wick was on approx. 100 more screens so per screen average “Air” ($4,122 average on approx. 3500 screens) BEAT “John Wick 4” ($4.010 average on approx. 3600 screens). 

  • Worldwide “Super Mario Bros Movie” broke even more records with a total of $173 million in international box office so it’s worldwide total as of Sunday is a whopping $378 million.  Biggest worldwide opening for an animated movie EVER and 2nd biggest international opening for an animated movie (after “Frozen 2”).  It’s also the biggest worldwide opening of 2023 (so far).

“Air” (released by Warner Bros in some international countries) made a decent $10.5 million internationally for a $30 million global total.

Other News:

  • At the “Star Wars Celebration” in London last Friday it was announced that 3 new “Star Wars” movies will be coming (not soon – first one might not be until 2027).  Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as “Rey” in a movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (most recently directed the “Ms Marvel” TV series).  There will also be movies directed by Dave Filoni (who is working a few Star Wars TV series including “The Mandalorian”) and James Mangold (who directed the upcoming “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”)
  • Speaking of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”, a new full trailer was released a few days ago.  In my opinion, MUCH BETTER than the previous trailer.
