Saidi’s Take – 12/6/2022

Hello everyone,

  • Two weeks left until “Avatar: The Way of Water” comes out so the domestic box office isn’t so strong this past weekend.  It was the 6th lowest domestic box office of the year with a total of approx. $52.9 million.  It would have been even lower if the #2 movie of the weekend – “Violent Night” – didn’t come out.  It made approx. $13.4 million.  “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” was #1 again with approx. $17.5 million.  
  • The New York Film Critics announced their awards late last week.  Not so surprising except for the best director.  “Tár” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” both too 2 awards.  It’s interesting to see Ke Huy Qyan win best supporting actor the day after the trailer for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” premiered.  He played Short Round in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” almost 40 years ago and after he did that movie and “The Goonies” he hasn’t starred in anything until “Everything Everywhere All at Once“ this year.

BEST ACTOR – Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin and After Yang

BEST SCREENPLAY – Martin McDonagh, The Banshees of Inisherin

BEST INTERNATIONAL FILM – EO (Poland)

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY – Claudio Miranda, Top Gun: Maverick

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS – Keke Palmer, Nope

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR – Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once

BEST NON-FICTION FILM – All the Beauty and the Bloodshed

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM – Marcel the Shell With Shoes On

  • They just announced that “The Flash” movie has been rescheduled one week earlier in 2023 to June 13 where it will have some competition with the new Pixar movie “Elemental” and the R rated comedy “No Hard Feelings” starring Jennifer Lawrence.
  • Speaking of next summer movies.  There have already been teaser trailers released for next summers “Elemental”, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3”, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”, and “Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One“, but people are still waiting for the teaser trailers for next summers “Fast X”, “Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse” (according to social media, that trailer will be coming soon), and the above mentioned “The Flash”.
