Saidi’s Take 9/26/2022

This past weekend the domestic box office improved 17% over the previous weekend.  It was the first time since the end of July that 3 movies made over $10 million at the domestic box office.  The #1 was “Don’t Worry Darling” which made an estimated $19.3 million which makes it the highest domestic box office opening weekend since “Dragon Ball Super” made $21.1 million over a month ago.  #2 was last weeks #1 “The Woman King” with $11 million and #3 was the remastered re-release of “Avatar” which made $10.5 million.

However, the total weekend box office of approx. $60 million is about half of the same weekend back in 2019 where the total was $123.4 million led by the $31 million opening of the first “Downton Abbey” movie.

Internationally, “Don’t Worry Darling” and “Avatar” switched places.  “Avatar” made around $20 million internationally for a worldwide weekend total of $30.5 million while “Don’t Worry Darling” made less than $11 million internationally for a worldwide weekend total about equal to “Avatar”.  The international box office for “Ticket To Paradise” (the romantic comedy starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts which wont open in the US until next month) came in slightly above “Don’t Worry Darling”  with $11.1 million for it’s 2nd weekend.  It’s worldwide box office after two weeks is approx. the same as “Don’t Worry Darling” opening weekend worldwide total.

Today AMC theatres filed that they were going to sell up to 425 million shares so they can pay down some of their debt.  The company isn’t suffering as much as Regal/CineWorld which filed for bankruptcy a couple weeks ago but they are still dealing with the box office slowdown like the other theater chain is.

Little bit of humor….

This is a REAL trivia question…

14 years later, ALL the people listed have now played “Batman”.
