Paul Schrader’s KickStarter fueled endeavor appears to be getting a premiere at a decent locale. Featuring the ever pressing basket case of a former Disney star turned into a trash parade on steroids in Lindsay Lohan, who is finally acting with someone on her talent level in adult film actor and otherwise unremarkable personality James Deen. How’s that for a sentence?
Now, of course, Paul Schrader is one hell of a writer, and as such he has been the mind behind some pretty serious American cinema classics. His directing…well, maybe not so much. I did like ‘American Gigolo’ back in the day and was always fond of ‘Cat People’ if only for Nastassia Kinski’s presence. And, that had little to do with her acting, I’ll just leave it at that.
All I can tell you with any certainty is that the trailer looks preposterous, as do Lindsay Lohan and James Deen. The words “vapid”, “pandering” and “out of touch” all come to mind. I hold little hope for this and that the film has been floating around for so long with so little to show for its presence, I think speaks volumes to its appeal.
That the Lincoln Center will be screening it at all, to my mind, is more a response to Mr. Schrader’s past work than anything to do with this mess. Let’s see if the intellectual set can save this “film” from the dust heap it appears to be headed for otherwise.
