saidi’s take – 3/18/2026

Hello everyone,

BOX OFFICE: “Hoppers” retained the #1 spot declining just 37% to make $28.6 million on its second weekend.  The new movies “Reminders of Him” came in second with $18 million and “Undertone” came in 3rd with $9.3 million.  The rest of the box office was so low the rerelease of “Kiki’s Delivery Service” came in at #7 with just $1.7 million.

Overall, the total domestic box office went down 12% for a total of $84.4 million.  I’m guessing that doesn’t include the advance screenings of “Project Hail Mary” over the weekend which was sold out at a lot of IMAX screens (at least in the Los Angeles area).

WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: Worldwide box office “Hoppers” also did well with a worldwide total of about $60 million international for a global total of $165 million after two weekends.  Unfortunately, it will probably be overshadowed by “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” which opens next weekend in other countries before it opens in the US Wednesday April 1.  “Scream 7” has now made %177 worldwide which is more than the ENTIRE box office for the first “Scream” movie.  The Oscar winning “Hamnet” is still playing in theaters and just passed a worldwide gross of $100 million.

OTHER NEWS:

The Academy Awards were this past Sunday and – as expected – the predicting winner in the winner in most categories.  I didn’t watch it but I’m told they had an extra long “In Memorial” with speeched by Billy Crystal (for Rob Reiner), and Barbara Streisand (for Robert Redford).  The winners were.

LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR: Timothée Chalamet was a hopeful to win best actor at the Academy Awards.  However, a lot of people think his hopes faded after he said that “no one cares” about performance arts like ballet and opera.

Including Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show” who said “..But as of last night, it is clear that opera and ballet have defeated Timothée Chalamet.  No contest. A knockout! Even before they brought out prima ballerina Misty Copeland in the middle of the Sinners performance right in front of him.  Boom. So, opera and ballet!”  (Starting at around 27 seconds into the video at this link).
