saidi’s take – 2/18/2026

Hello everyone,

Today’s email is dedicated to the great Robert Duvall who passed away yesterday.

BOX OFFICE: Although the Olympics are still happening, the box office got a resurgence thanks to the new releases.  “Wuthering Heights” is the 9th Warner Bros movie to open at #1 at the domestic box office.  The record goes all the way back to “The Minecraft Movie” in April of 2025.  “Wuthering Heights” made $32.8 million (3-day) and $37.5 million (4-day weekend).  #2 was “GOAT” with $27.2 (3-day) and $35.1 (4-day weekend), and #3 was “Crime 101” with $14.25 (3-day) and $16 million (4-day weekend).

Overall domestic box office was $118.9 million for the 3-day which is almost double the total weekend domestic box office last week and $140.4 million for the 4-day.

WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: Thanks to “Avatar Fire and Ash”, “Zootopia 2”, and “Send Help”, Disney is has now made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office for 2026.  Meanwhile, the three new releases domestically also did very well worldwide.  “Wuthering Heights” made $83 million worldwide, “GOAT” made $50.6 million worldwide, and “Crime 101’ made $28.2 million worldwide.  All 3 made about the same amount of money internationally as they did domestically.

OTHER NEWS:

In a somewhat surprising move, Warner Bros has decided to go back to talking to Paramount about buying Warner Bros Discovery, but they’re only planning to talk to them for 7 days.  Netflix approved the negotiating hoping it will end all of Paramount’s new offers for Warner Bros.

Over the weekend the Independent Spirit Awards were given out.

The writer’s guild negotiations with the studios don’t start until next week, but this week the staff at the Writers Guild offices went on strike.  The staff just unionized late last year and has been negoitiating their first contract since then.  The workers say they’re “..showing no intention to come to an agreement on most of WGSU’s core issues”.

LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR: Has there ever been a “Wuthering Heights” movie before?

Yep….
