you should see movies in theaters – part deux

Since I posted about all the classic movies returning to movie theaters there has been even more news.  The 50th Anniversary re-release of “Jaws” made more money than any other  new movie release at the domestic box office, it was the 2nd best box office over the 4 day Labor Day holiday weekend.  A new version of the classic “Wizard of Oz” opened at the Sphere in Las Vegas.  Plus, Regal Cinemas is showing classic “movie masterpieces” every day in September.

Regal Cinemas “Month of Masterpieces”

Every day in September, Regal Cinemas across the country will be showing a different classic movie every day.  Ranging from the 1940s (“Casablanca” and “Citizen Kane”) to 10 years ago (“Interstellar” in 2014).

It looks like all movies will be shown in digital projection and tickets for all movies will be $8.99 per ticket.  See this link for more info.

The “Wizard of Oz” at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

The reviews for “The “Wizard of Oz” like you’ve never seen it before” which premiered at The Sphere in Las Vegas this past weekend have been spectacular.  Not only was the movie expanded to play on the giant screen.  They’ve remodeled the entire building.  There are giant shoes outside of the Sphere (see photo at top) and there’s videos of the movie playing in the lobby of the building.

(see more photos and videos of the lobby at this link)

Then when you watch the movie the chairs shake during some scenes, there’s wind, smoke, debris, and leaves during the tornado scene, there’s “apples” (that seem more like Nerf toys according to one person) that fall during one scene, there’s “artificial snow” that falls during the poppy scene, there’s monkeys that fly on drones during the wicked witch scene, and there’s live pyrotechnics during the wizard scene.  You can see and videos here and here.

So, it seems like the old movies returning to movie theater screens (or giant screens like The Sphere) are the most popular thing to go see these days.  I know if I ever get a chance to go to Las Vegas I’m going to check out the “Wizard of Oz” (although the tickets are over $100 each)
