Hello everyone,
BOX OFFICE: For the 5th time in 2025, an ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY (not based on anything and not a sequel/prequel/remake/reboot/spinoff of another movie) was the #1 movie at the domestic box office. “Weapons” was the #1 movie this weekend with $43.5 million (the other 4 movies were “Flight Risk” in January, “Novocaine” in March, “Sinners” in April, and “F1” in June). The second movie at the weekend box office was “Freakier Friday” with $28.5 million. The #1 movie from last week – “The Fantastic Four First Steps” went down 59% to make $15 million for its 3rd weekend. Its domestic total is now at $230 million. Both of the new releases from last weekend also slipped approx. 50%. “The Bad Guys 2” made $10.6 million and “The Naked Gun” made $8.3 million. “F1” – which will be re-released in select IMAX screens next weekend – is still in the top 10 at #8 with $2.9 million and $178 million domestic total.
The total domestic box office rose 10.5% to $132.5 million.
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: Both new movies did a little less internationally than they did domestically. “Weapons” made $71.8 million globally and “Freakier Friday” made $44.5 million globally. “The Fantastic Four First Steps” is now at $435 million worldwide, “Superman” just rose past $575 million worldwide, “Jurassic World Rebirth” just hit $800 million worldwide, and “F1” just passed $570 million worldwide.
OTHER NEWS:
The just announced that you’ll need to wait a little longer to see the next “Shrek” movie since it was pushed back from Dec 2026 to June 2027.
After receiving a lot of pushback from movie studios about their new longer trailer/advertisement runtime before the movie, AMC said there is some room to shorten it….slightly. They said “..we can shave four or five minutes out of it”
It seems like Warner Bros is trying to act like Disney. They said that they’re “…targeting 12-14 theatrical releases annually across its four key labels – Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Studios, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation” although Disney still has the most “labels” (Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Animation, Pixar, Marvel, 20th Century Studios, Searchlight, and Lucasfilm)
It was reported that the new owners of Paramount are looking to sell the “National Amusements” movie theater chain which once launched the Redstone family media empire.
The famous “Cinerama Dome” movie theater in Hollywood still remains closed over 5 years after it shut it’s doors in March 2020 because of COVID. The Pacfic Theaters and Arclight Cinemas chain sold off almost all of their other locations but they still own the “Cinerama Dome” and the “Arclight Hollywood” next door. There’s been rumors of remodeling but it looks like nothing has happened yet. There have also been inquiries by other movie theater chains but it looks like the company isn’t interested in selling the property.
LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR: Timothy Olyphant – (see more comments about him at this link) – was on “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” recently promoting two new TV series that he is in. The movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” came up – because Timothy was in the movie – and they mentioned the sequel currently filming. Timothy silently mouthed that he was in the sequel….

…he forgot that they film the podcast and show it on the internet. The other people quickly told him and asked if he wanted them to cut that he mentioned it. He said that he might not be in it now that he mentioned it. You can see the video clip at this link.
