Disney is doing the best this year with 4 of the 10 top movies for both domestic and worldwide so far.  Disney is the only studio with a 2025 worldwide total over $1.1 billion but Warner Bros (with 3 of the 10 top movies) is close with a total over $900 million.  Universal/DreamWorks (2 of the top 10 domestically) is the 3rd best studio of 2025.  Paramount is 4th.

The good news:

There is 1 movie on both lists that ISN’T a sequel/prequel/reboot/spinoff/etc and ISN’T based on a book/comic/TV show/etc – “Sinners”

For total box office, 2025 is at almost $4 BILLION total worldwide.  Approx. 23% over 2024.

The bad news:

For the first time EVER – a movie made in China is the #1 movie worldwide this year (so far).

Last year at halftime there was 1 movie that passed $1 BILLION (although it passed $1 billion a little bit after halfway through 2024).  It doesn’t look like there is any American release that will pass $1 Billion worldwide so far this year but there’s a lot of big movies coming including “ Jurassic World: Rebirth”, “Superman”, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, “Wicked: For Good” (part 1 was #3 domestically and #5 worldwide in 2024), and “Avatar: Fire and Ash”.

So, Disney is in the lead but Warner Bros and Universal are close….let’s see how the rest of the year goes.
