saidi’s take – 3/25/2025

Hello everyone,

BOX OFFICE: This past weekend the live action remake of “Snow White” did OK (on the lower end of predictions) making $42.2 million this past weekend, but unfortunately everything else did poorly.  No other movie made over $5 million.  #2 for the weekend was “Black Bag” which sunk 44% to make $4.2 million.  #3 was “Captain America Brave New World” which sunk another 29% in its 6th weekend to make $4.02 million.  Last weeks #1 movie “Novocaine” sunk almost 59% to make $3.68 million.  The other new release “Alto Knights” bombed with only $3.16 million for #6 on the weekends box office list.

Overall, the total domestic box office went up about 44% to almost $74.5 million.

WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: The global box office for “Snow White” was also not that impressive making a worldwide total of $87.3 million which means it made approx. the same amount in foreign countries as it made domestically.  In other news, “Captain America Brave New World” crossed $400 million worldwide this past weekend and “Mickey 17” passed $100 million worldwide.  Two thirds of the “Mickey 17” total came from foreign box office because it’s only made approx. $40 million domestically so far.

RELEASE CHANGES:

Last week I mentioned that they hadn’t starting filming “Saw 11” although it was scheduled to be released this Sept.  This week they removed the movie from the schedule and replaced it with “The Strangers: Chapter 2”.  The next chapter in “The Strangers” reboot that came out in 2024.

Sony has renamed and postponed a movie formerly named “Beneath the Storm” scheduled for Aug 1 of this summer.  The movie is now named “Shiver” and it’s scheduled for July 4th weekend in 2026.  Sony also removed the “Street Fighter” reboot from their schedule.  It was scheduled for about a year from now (Mar 20, 2026) but Sonys distribution deal with Legendary ends at the end of this year.  No word on who will release the movie now.

Warner Bros just changed a few release dates the end of this year and the start of next year.

  • Zack Creggers “Weapons” has been moved from 2026 to Aug 8 of this year.
  • Paul Thomas Andersons next movie “One Battle After Another” starring Leonardo DiCaprio was scheduled in Aug but is now pushed to Sept 26 of this year.
  • Maggie Gyllenhaals “The Bride” starring Christian Bale had the Sept release date but is now moved to March 6. 2026
  • The animated “The Cat in the Hat” moves up one week from March 6, 2026 to Feb 27, 2026
  • David Robert Mitchells “Flowervale Street” starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor moves from March 13 to August 14, 2026.

Warner Bros also still has two unannounced movies currently listed as “untitled event film” scheduled for Nov 21 and Dec 19 of this year.  Some people think they may announce those titles at their presentation at the CinemaCon convention next week.

“Happy Gilmore 2” now has an official release.  It’s scheduled to be released on Netflix on July 25, 2025.

OTHER NEWS:

Last week I mentioned a mayor in Florida wanted to stop funding for the “O Cinema” independent movie theater because they showed the Academy Award winning “No Other Land”.  Well, he told the city council who rejected the idea so he withdrew it.

Last year they announced it late so this year they announced it almost a year in advance – Conan O’Brien will host the Academy Awards again in 2026.

The movie theater trade organization formerly known as “NATO” (National Association of Theater Owners) has now been renamed to “Cinema United”

LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR:

The last couple movies I saw they now say “silence your cellphone” and “adjust the brightness” of your cell phone….but people still ignore it.
