Hello everyone,
BOX OFFICE: It’s a new year with a new #1 movie. “Mufasa: The Lion King” finally got past “Sonic The Hedgehog 3” to take the #1 spot for the first weekend of 2025. It made $23.4 million which is down approx. 36% from the previous week while “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” made $21.3 million down approx. 42% from the previous week. The total domestic box office is also catching up. “Mufasa: The Lion King” is now at approx. $168 million and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is at approx. $187 million domestic total. However, most schools are back in class starting today so next weekend might not be so big for children/family movies. The biggest new release for this past weekend ISN’T a new release. The 30th anniversary of the movie “Seven” played on about 200 IMAX screens and made $915 thousand for #11 on the weekend box office. That means that the total domestic box office for “Seven” is (finally) slightly over $100 million domestic total.
The total domestic box office for the weekend was approx. $104 million which is approx. 36% less than the previous weekend but approx. 22% higher than the first weekend of 2024.
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: Worldwide “Mufasa: The Lion King” was also the top box office with an approx. $53 million in foreign box office for a worldwide total of $476 million. “Moana 2” is inching closer to a $1 billion worldwide box office. It’s currently at approx. $961 million. “Wicked” is getting close to $700 million worldwide total. It’s currently at $680 million.
AWARD NEWS: The Golden Globes kicked off the 2025 award season last night. Although, the winners of this award show are getting more and more irrelevant (if you ask me) – especially the “musical or comedy” winners – here are last night’s winners:
Best Motion Picture – Drama: The Brutalist
Best Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy: Emilia Pérez
Best Director – Motion Picture: Brady Corbet (The Brutalist)
Best Screenplay – Motion Picture: Peter Straughan (Conclave)
Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama: Adrien Brody (The Brutalist)
Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama: Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here)
Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy: Sebastian Stan (A Different Man) – I haven’t seen it but I know this is definitely not a “musical” and I haven’t heard anyone say it’s a “comedy” except the Golden Globes. I’ve heard it’s more of a thriller.
Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy: Demi Moore (The Substance) – I haven’t seen it but I know this is definitely not a “musical” but I heard at least one person call it a “dark comedy”.
Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role In Any Motion Picture: Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain)
Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role In Any Motion Picture: Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez)
Cinematic and Box Office Achievement: Wicked (Universal Pictures)
Best Motion Picture – Animated: Flow
Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language: Emilia Pérez
LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR:

If you don’t know – this is the family from the “Poltergeist” (1982) movie. I won’t ruin it for you but if you live next door to them, you have a lot of other things to worry about.
