Deadpool and Wolverine – $211 million
Inside Out 2 – $154 million
Moana 2 – $130 million
Wicked – $112 million
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – $111 million
There was NO movies that made more than $200 million on their opening weekend in 2023 – the highest was “Barbie” with $162 million – but the movies that had an opening weekend of more than $20 million went down in 2024 – 34 films in 2024 vs 40 in 2023.
TOP 10 DOMESTIC BOX OFFICE WEEKENDS OF 2024:
(5 day) Nov 27 – Dec 1 – $423 million (Thanksgiving)
(4-day) Nov 28 – Dec 1 – $333 million (Thanksgiving)
July 26-28 – $284 million (“Deadpool and Wolverine” opening weekend)
Nov 29 – Dec 1 – $274 million (3-day Thanksgiving weekend)
June 14 – 16 – $213 million (“Inside Out 2” opening weekend)
In 2023, the top weekend was the 3-day weekend July 21-23 with $310 million when “Barbenheimer” opened. There were no 3-day weekends in 2024 that made over $300 million. Also, there were 30 3-day weekends that made over $100 million in 2023, in 2024 there were only 22 weekends.
Overall, the total worldwide box office for 2024 of $8.7 billion is approx. 3% lower than the previous year. Studios and movie theaters have been hoping the box office to grow every year – eventually reaching pre-pandemic levels (hopefully). This is the first year since the start of the pandemic that the total worldwide box office was lower than the previous year.
This is mostly because 2023 did well early with the $1.36 BILLION “Super Mario Bros Movie” which opened in April 2023 and continued to be fairly strong – through the summer – reaching a high during the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon. The total domestic box office weekend hardly ever sank below $100 million from April to August. Then it finished on a low note. The only movie to do well after the summer 2023 was “Wonka”.
In 2024 the box office had a little bump with “Dune Part 4” and “Godzilla Vs Kong The New Empire” (but both of those movies combined made a little less than “The Super Mario Bros Movie” made) but the rest of the time the weekends were pretty low until “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool and Wolverine” came out in the middle of summer. Then the box office weekends went down again from the start of September to when “Moana 2” and “Wicked” were released around Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, those movies weren’t as big as “Avatar The Way of Water” ($2.3 BILLION in 2022) or “Spider Man No Wat Home” ($1.9 BILLION in 2021). If 2024 year had lasted a couple more weeks, “Moana 2” and “Wicked” may have gotten the total box office to tie the 2023 total box office, but probably not beat it.
So, now everyone is looking at 2025…….
