BOX OFFICE: Both of the new major studio releases this weekend didn’t do well. “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” made approx. 4.5 million to come in at #5 on the domestic box office charts and “Kraven the Hunter” made approx. $11 million coming in at #3. The “Kraven the Hunter” opening weekend is the LOWEST OPENING WEEKEND EVER for a Marvel/Sony movie (“Madame Web” earlier this year made $15 million). The #1 and #2 movies were the same as the previous weekend. “Moana 2” was #1 with approx. $26.5 million, down approx. 48% from its previous weekend and “Wicked” was #2 with approx. $22.6 million which is down approx. 38% from the previous weekend. #4 was last weeks #3 “Gladiator 2” which made $7 million, down approx. 39% from its previous weekend. Another notable new release – “The Last Showgirl” made $50,300 at the SINGLE THEATER it opened on this past weekend. That’s the best per screen average of this past weekend by far.
“Wicked” will be #3 on the 2024 domestic box office VERY SOON. Its domestic total is $359 million which is only $3 million less than the current #3 movie “Despicable Me 4”. “Moana 2” is behind it with a domestic total of $337 million. Both of them should pass the current #3 movie – so they’ll probably be #3 and #4 by the end of the year – but they’re about $275 million below the current #2 movie – “Deadpool and Wolverine” which is at $636 million.
Overall domestic box office is approx. $93.5 million which is down approx. 32% from the previous weekend but the box office should go up again next weekend with the release of “Mufasa” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”.
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: “Kraven the Hunter” also didn’t do so well worldwide with a global opening weekend of just $26 million. Meanwhile, “Moana 2” and “Wicked” are still doing well worldwide. “Moana 2” is now at approx. $717 million worldwide. It just passed “Dune Part 2” to be #4 at the worldwide box office for 2024. I’m pretty sure it won’t make the approx. $250 million to make it to #3 at the worldwide box office by the end of the year (#3 is currently “Despicable Me 4” with $969 million). “Wicked” is also still doing well at the worldwide box office making a total of $525 million. It’s currently #8 on the worldwide box office for 2024. There’s a possibility it will go as high as #6 by the end of the year (#6 right now is “Godzilla vs Kong The New Empire” with $571 million and #7 is “Kung Fu Panda 4” with $547 million). Also, this past weekend “Venom The Last Dance” reached the top 10 of the worldwide box office for 2024. It’s at #9 with $475 million.
OTHER NEWS:
They just announced recently that NEXT YEARS “Wicked” will be named “Wicked: For Good” instead of “Wicked Part 2”. It’s scheduled for Nov 21, 2025.
Next years CinemaCon, the annual movie theater convention, just announced that it will be back with ALL the studios presenting their upcoming movies. This past year, Sony Pictures decided to skip it but they’ll be back in 2025 and it will be the very first time that “MGM/Amazon” will be doing a presentation at the convention. CinemaCon 2025 is scheduled for March 31 – April 3, 2025.
LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR:
Yep, last Friday was Friday the 13th but not many mentions of it. Too busy with the holidays, I guess. It was also the last day of school in 2024 for several students across the country.
