Hello everyone,
BOX OFFICE: As expected, the new movies didn’t make a ton of money. “Deadpool and Wolverine” went back to #1 this past weekend with approx. $18.3 million. #2 at the box office was “Alien Romulus” which dropped a huge 61% from the previous weekend to approx. $16.3 million. The best new release was “Blink Twice” which was #4 with $7.3 million. The other wide release “The Crow” only made $4.6 million which put it at #8 for the weekend.
Overall, the total domestic weekend sunk a huge 37.5% lower than the previous weekend with a total of $87 million which is even lower than the same weekend last year which had a total of $90 million.
Although “Deadpool and Wolverine” was by far the biggest opening of the summer, it looks like it won’t be the biggest domestic movie of the summer. The end of the summer is normally Labor Day weekend – which is next weekend – and right now “Inside Out 2” is the #1 domestic movie of the year with $646 million. “Deadpool and Wolverine” is trailing by about $70 million with $577 million.
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: Same thing for the worldwide box office. The new movies didn’t do so well but the previous movies are still going strong. The most notable is that “Inside Out 2” became the first animated movie to pass $1 billion at the international box office. It’s now at approx $1.003 billion internationally. It’s now 1 of only 12 movies to pass $1 billion internationally and the ONLY animated movie to do it (if you don’t count things like “Avatar” CGI as animation). This past weekend also made “Inside Out 2” #10 on the ALL TIME WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE.
The best movie internationally this past weekend was “Alien Romulus” again with an additional $41 million international box office and $225 million total worldwide box office.
Internationally, “Deadpool and Wolverine” doesn’t have a chance of passing the current #1 worldwide movie of 2024 “Inside Out 2”. “Deadpool and Wolverine” worldwide total is $1.212 billion which is approx. $435 million lower than “Inside Out 2” almost $1.65 billion. It looks like “Inside Out 2” might be the surprise #1 movie of the entire 2024. Most of that is due to international box office. “Inside Out 2” just passed a billion internationally while “Deadpool and Wolverine” has only made $634 million internationally, approx. $370 million less.
OTHER NEWS:
I mentioned last week that Edgar Bronfman might make a competing bid for Paramount Global before the deadline (Aug 20). Around the time I finished typing, he made a competing bid of a little less than $5 billion. Paramount extended the deadline to consider the competing bid. A couple days later he raised the competing bid to $6 billion. Then, today the latest news is that he has dropped his competing bid. I thought something like this would happen so I didn’t send an “update” to the news last week.
Last week they released the new trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming movie “Megalopolis”, but then quickly took it down when it was discovered that some of the movie reviews listed in the trailer were fake/created by A.I. Lionsgate pulled the trailer from online websites. No word on when the trailer would be re-released for the movie opening in movie theaters in about a month.
Last week, Warner Bros said it would expand into Las Vegas committing $8.5 billion in production costs (over several years) – if the studio is built and the state adds more tax incentives for filming in the state of Nevada. The studio was originally proposed by actor/producer Mark Walberg as “Hollywood 2.0” for a site near the University of Las Vegas (just a few miles east of the Las Vegas strip). There has also been a previous proposal by Sony Pictures for a studio in Summerlin contingent on the tax incentives. A tax incentive proposal with $190 million in credits never made it to a vote in 2023 but may be resubmitted for a vote next year.
LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR:

So, it’s ALMOST like going to the concert….except the BAND IS NOT THERE????? Hopefully the tickets are a lot cheaper.
A better idea, MORE SHOWS WITH THE BAND!!!!!
Also, you can only see the movie in Las Vegas??? Another better idea – show the movie at OTHER MOVIE THEATERS. IMAX theaters would be good (although I’m told they don’t compare to the MSG Sphere). It’s a good promotion to get people to come to shows or movies at the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas.
