Hello Everyone,

BOX OFFICE: This past weekend was the first time “Deadpool and Wolverine” moved down to 2nd on the top ten of the weekend.  Partly, because it gave up some of the theaters it was playing at because the new #1 – “Alien Romulus” – is released by the same studio.  “Alien Romulus” was #1 with $42 million, “Deadpool and Wolverine” sunk down to $30 million which gives it a total domestic box office of almost $550 million  (which put it’s less than $100 below the #1 domestic movie of 2024 so far – “Inside Out 2”).  Last weeks almost #1 movie “It Ends With Us” drops almost 53% to $23 million.  Another odd thing about this past weekend was the 15th anniversary release of “Coraline” which was only on approx. 1500 screens was #5 on the top domestic box office list with $9.6 million.

Overall, the total domestic box office is down 11% to $140 million.  Although this is much higher than the same weekend last year (which was at $97 million), it looks like the downward trend will continue for the remaining weekends of the summer.  I don’t think “The Crow” reboot or “Blink Twice” will make a ton of money in the coming weeks.  I think the next fairly big release will be “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” which will come out JUST AFTER Labor Day (unofficial end of summer).

WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: Worldwide, “Alien Romulus” also did pretty well making a little over $110 million worldwide this past weekend.  That includes making $25.7 million in China which is the 2nd highest opening weekend for an American movie in China this year.  “Deadpool and Wolverine” rose to a worldwide total of $1.144 BILLION which makes it the BIGGEST R RATED MOVIE RELEASE EVER.

OTHER NEWS

The upcoming merger of Paramount and Skydance has led to Paramount cutting over 2000 jobs including the ENTIRE Paramount Television Studios division, but the cuts aslo include people in all areas including feature films and home entertainment.  Hopefully, that won’t affect Paramounts upcoming theatrical releases like “Gladiator 2” at the end of this year.

HOWEVER, the deadline for other potential buyers to make an offer for Paramount is 2 days away (Aug 21) and there are rumors that Edgar Bronfman Jrs bid for the studio may be made just before the deadline – which means it’ll be made any minute now.

LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR:

Let’s see “Broken” (2012) starring Charlie Booty, Lily James, Tim Roth…..never saw it.  “Broken” (2006) starring Nadja Brand, Eric Colvin, Abbey Stirling…..nope.  Another 2006 release with the same name starring Heather Graham, Jeremy Sisto, Tess Haper….don’t think so.  “Broken” in 2014 starring Jeong Jae-yeong, Lee Sung-min, Seo Jun-yeong…..I think that movie was made in China.  “Broken” (2021) starring Laura Buckles, Tina-Marie Springham, Griffin Cork……don’t think so.  “Broken” (2016) starring Morjana Alaoui, Mel Raido, Craig Conway…..didn’t see that one either.  There’s a lot more I didn’t see.  I remember seeing the movie Angelina Jolie directed but that was called “Unbroken”.

Looks like the title is popular but the movies with that title aren’t.
