Hello everyone,
BOX OFFICE: As expected, the new movies didn’t take down last weeks #1 movie “Despicable Me 4”. It made approx. $43.6 at the domestic box office this past weekend. However, the big surprise of this weekend was the new crime/horror/thriller movie “Longlegs” from Neon which did surprisingly well knocking “Inside Out 2” down to #3 and beat predictions making $22.4 million. If it had been on the same number of screens as “Despicable Me 4” there is a possibility that it could have been the #1 movie (it was on 2500 screens while “Despicable Me 4” was on almost 4450). “Inside Out 2” sunk down to #3 with almost $20 million. However, it’s domestic total of $571 million is just a little bit under the total box office of last years top animated movie “The Super Mario Bros Movie” ($575 million total) and it’s just $40 million shy of being the highest grossing Pixar movie at the domestic box office (“Incredibles 2” is currently #1 with a total of $608 million). The other wide opening this weekend was the comedy/romance “Fly Me To the Moon” which came out below predictions and made only $9.4 million. It was #5 right below “A Quiet Place Day One” which made $11.3 million for #4
The overall domestic box office gross was $122 million which is down approx. 22% from the previous week and about 13% lower than the same weekend last year which made $140 million total.
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: At the worldwide box office, the “Despicable Me 4” box office pushed the franchise total (which also includes the “Minions” movies) to OVER $5 billion. The first animated franchise to do that. The worldwide box office for “Despicable Me 4” is currently $438 million. Also, “Inside Out 2” became the biggest Pixar movie at the worldwide box office and some are saying it could become the biggest animated movie. It’s only about $105 million below the current #1 worldwide animated movie “Frozen 2” which is at $1.453 billion while “Inside Out 2” is at $1.348 billion. “Inside Out 2” is also the main reason why Disney became the first studio to make over $2 billion worldwide in 2024. Disney only released 3 movies – “Inside Out 2”, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” and “The First Omen” – so with all the other movies Disney is releasing – including the upcoming “Deadpool and Wolverine” and “Moana 2” this winter – it’s expected to at least double that total. In other international box office news, the upcoming domestic release “Twisters” opened in a few foreign countries and made $11.5 million this past weekend.
OTHER NEWS:
As many people expected, Warner Bros and Kevin Costners production company has decided to postpone the release of “Horizon An American Saga Chapter 2”. They’re going to release the first movie on a streaming service and video on demand TOMORROW (July 16th) and they’re thinking that a lot of people who still don’t want to go to movie theaters will watch it. After that, they’ll decide on when to release the other movie. Some people predict the 2nd movie might premiere on MAX and movie theaters at the same time.
In union news, the end of the current union contract between the Teamsters and the studios ends fairly soon – July 31 – but they’re still negotiating and some say they’re still fairly apart on some issues. Also, some union members are upset that the head of the Teamsters union was scheduled to speak today (July 15th) at the Republican National Convention since the union usually leans more democratic.
LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR:

There are a lot of DO NOTs in this photo. DO NOT TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF IN A MOVIE THEATER!!! DO NOT PUT YOUR FEET ON TOP OF THE BACKREST OF THE NEXT CHAIR (even with your shoes on)!!! DO NOT LEAVE THE LIGHTS UP WHEN THE MOVIE (or the movie trailers) ARE PLAYING!!! DO NOT PUT THE EXITS RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE MOVIE SCREEN (that one is a pet peeve of mine).
