Hello everyone,

BOX OFFICE: “A Quiet Place Day One” shot past predictions and made a little bit above $52 million which is better than the previous 2 “Quiet Place” movies opening weekend. However, that didn’t get it to #1.  “Inside Out 2” only dropped about 43% and retained the #1 spot on the domestic box office with approx. $57.5 million.  That’s the 7th best 3rd weekend at the domestic box office EVER (just under last years “The Super Mario Bros Movie” 3rd weekend).  However, if “A Quiet Place Day One” were on as many screens as “Inside Out 2” it would have been #1 for the weekend.  “Inside Out 2” had a per screen average of almost 13 thousand on 4440 screens while “A Quiet Place Day One” made a little over 14 thousand on approx. 3700 screens (740 screens less).  Meanwhile, the other new release -“Horizon An American Saga – Chapter 1” was #3 with $11 million.  There’s a lot of reviews saying that it should have been a miniseries instead of a movie but – since Kevin Costner is personally paying for most of the budget and marketing – most news are currently saying that part 2 will still be released in theaters in August.  However, there’s a question about if part 3 and part 4 of the story will be filmed.

The total domestic weekend was $154.4 million which is just slightly higher than last weeks total and about 17% higher than the same weekend last year.

WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: Both “Inside Out 2” and “A Quiet Place Day One” did very well internationally.  “Inside Out 2” became the first movie of 2024 to cross $1 billion at the worldwide box office and it did it faster than BOTH billion-dollar movies from 2023.  “A Quiet Place Day One” beat worldwide expectations and made an impressive worldwide total of almost $100 million.  “Despicable Me 4”, which opens this Wednesday (July 3rd) domestically, has already made approx. $25 million in a few foreign countries it opened in.

OTHER NEWS:

“Wicked Part 1” and “Moana 2” were scheduled to open on the same day on Nov 27, 2024.  Most people predicted that it would move since the target audiences for both movies are somewhat similar.  They just announced that it will be released 1 week earlier on Nov 22.  This puts it up against “Gladiator 2”, but that movie won’t be attracting families like the other two movies.

There seems to be a new person interested in Paramount Global.  Barry Diller, who was once head of Paramount Pictures before Summer Redstone outbid him for the company about half a century ago.  Now, there’s reports that Barry Dillers IAC Corp has signed non-disclosure deals with National Amusements Inc, which is Paramount Globals biggest shareholder headed by Summer Redstones daughter Shari.

Last week, IATSE reached tentative agreements with the studios for their basic agreement and for their area standards agreements.  So, if the agreements are ratified by the members, there’s no more worrying about a potential strike this summer.

Finally, it looks like the that closed a few weeks ago will be reopening promptly.  When Sony Pictures purchased the chain a couple weeks ago, those theaters weren’t included because they were franchise locations.  Now, Sony has agreed to acquire those franchise locations and combine them with the rest of the chain.

LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR:

The “Halloween” secret is FINALLY REVEALED!!!!!

The long-held secret about the “Halloween” franchise has finally been revealed.  Before the first movie, Laurie (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) and Michael Myers were in love!!!!  The movies showed him killing everyone who would get in the way of them reuniting although Laurie didn’t love him anymore.

(Actually, this is just a behind the scenes shot from one of the “Halloween” movies).
