Hello everyone,

BOX OFFICE: This past weekend was still all about “Inside Out 2” which made $101 million.  That’s the highest 2nd weekend for an animated movie and the 7th highest 2nd weekend domestic box office gross EVER.  The last movie to make more money on its 2nd weekend was “Avengers Endgame” back in 2019.  Also, thanks to the “Juneteenth” holiday last Wednesday where the movie made $30 million, “Inside Out 2” is now the biggest movie of 2024 so far with a total of $356 million.  The new releases didn’t do very well this past weekend.  The highest was “The Bikeriders” with approx. $9.7 million coming in at #3.  However, the per screen average of two new limited releases were the highest of the weekend.  “Kinds of Kindness” only played on 5 screens and had an average of $75 thousand per screen and “Janet Planet” was only on 2 screens and had an average of approx. $25 thousand per screen.  “Inside Out 2” was 3rd with an average of approx. $23 thousand on 4440 screens.

Overall, the total domestic weekend box office was down to $153 million.  Approx. 28% lower than the previous weekend.  However, it’s still higher than the same weekend last year which was had a total domestic gross of $109 million (“No Hard Feelings” was the new release – but it was 3rd on the weekend box office).

WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE:  “Inside Out 2” also soared to the #1 spot of 2024 so far with an international total of approx. $164 million and a worldwide total of $728 million.  In Italy and Brazil, the movie was the 2nd highest opening weekend EVER (behind “Avengers Endgame) and in a few other countries it had the best opening weekend of 2024 so far.  In China, the movie has already made over 75% of the TOTAL gross of “Inside Out” in China.  Another animated movie which hasn’t opening domestically – “Despicable Me 4” – has already made approx. $9.4 million in 4 foreign countries.  Also, “Bad Boys 4” made another $24 million internationally and is approaching a worldwide gross approaching $300 million.  In Saudi Arabia, the total box office for “Bad Boys 4” is $15 million, which is the highest box office total for that country since “Top Gun Maverick”.

UNION NEWS: IATSE and the studios go back to the negotiating table today but last week there were people who reported that the studios seemed to have “..a perceived lack of urgency…”.  They said they are not planning on extending the current agreement past it’s end date at the end of July.  As a show of support for IATSE, last week members across the WGA, PGA, DGA and SAG-AFTRA signed a letter saying they stood in solidarity with IATSE.

OTHER NEWS:

The annual CineEurope movie theater convention – similar to the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas in the spring – ended last week and the news reported that Warner Bros dazzled with a new trailer for “Joker Folie A Deux”, Paramount showed footage of “Gladiator 2”, Universal showed footage of “Wicked” and it’s upcoming Michael Jackson biopic “Michael”, and Disney showed off footage from “Inside Out 2”, “Deadpool and Wolverine”, and “Moana 2”.

Speaking of Europe – Picturehouse confirmed that they’re closing of Historic Fulham Road & Bromley Cinemas as their parent company Cineworld is looking at options for its UK cinemas including possibly selling them.  Both cinemas have been operating since the 1930s.  Back in 2019, Picturehouse said they’re working on restoring both locations to “their 1930s glory” but the pandemic delayed those plans.

LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR:

It’s true.  What the heck is so interesting in front of them if the HURRICAINE IS BEHIND THEM!!!!!
