saidi’s take – 4/9/2024

Hello everyone,

BOX OFFICE:  After the highest weekend of 2024 so far the previous weekend, this past weekend could sustain the momentum.  Except for the #1 movie, no move made over $11 million.  The #1 movie last weekend – “Godzilla Vs Kong The New Empire” sunk 60% to $31 million but was #1 again.  The two new movie releases didn’t meet predictions.  The highest one was “Monkey Man” which was #2 with $10 million.  The other new release was “The First Omen” which was #4 with $8.3 million.  #3 was “Ghostbusters Frozen Empire” with $9 million.  Total domestic box office was $85.7 million which is down over 37% from the previous weekend and is approx. just 40% of the same weekend last year when the blockbuster “Super Mario Bros Movie” opened with $146 million.

WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: In other countries, “Godzilla Vs Kong The New Empire” also did well leading the weekend in foreign countries making an additional $59 million and rising to a worldwide total over $360 million.  “Kung Fu Panda 4” is still doing well making $27.4 million for a worldwide total of approx. $410 million.  “Dune Part 2” made an additional $11.2 million for a worldwide total of over $665 million.  For the two new movies, “The First Omen” made approx. $9 million for a worldwide total of $17.5 million while “Monkey Man” made approx. $2.6 million with a worldwide total of $12.7 million.  Also, this past weekend “Oppenheimer” became director Christopher Nolans biggest international movie ever.  It has now made almost $640 million in foreign box office.

UNION NEWS: As of today, it looks like there are only 3 union branches that haven’t completed agreements with the studios for their branch specific details.  However, after those negotiations are done they still need to negotiate the basic/general negotiations for the ENTIRE UNION.  Those negotiations are scheduled to start on April 29.  So, the negotiations are far from over. Coincidentally, the DreamWorks Animation Production Workers voted to join the Editors Guild and Animation Guild unions last week.

OTHER NEWS: The news today says that Netflix will be laying off a few more people – estimated to be 15 people but could be more – as they restructure their feature film department. Unfortunately, I am not in Las Vegas attending CinemaCon 2024 which starts today (as I’m typing this on Monday night there’s a screening of the upcoming movie “The Fall Guy” in Las Vegas tonight).  If I hear about any big news, I will send a follow up message this week or mention it next week.

LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR:

That could be why some people are so against AI technology.  It’s the start of the TERMINATOR UPRISING!!!!!!
