Hello everyone,
BOX OFFICE: After rising to almost the highest box office weekend of 2024 so far, the box office sunk again approx. 25% this past weekend to the third lowest of 2024 so far with almost $59 total domestic box office. This is due to the new movies not making that much money and the previous movies taking a pretty big drop. #1 was still “Bob Marley: One Love” with $13.5 million which was an approx. 53% drop. The best new movie was “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yalba – To the Hashira Training” (which – according to the news – is actually a set of TV episodes) was #2 with $11.5 million. #3 was “Ordinary Angels” which is also a new release and made $6.5 million. “Madame Web” fell from #2 to #4 this past weekend with $6 million which was an approx. 61% drop. The only other new release was “Drive Away Dolls” which was #8 with a disappointing $2.4 million.
WORLDWIDE BOX OFFICE: Worldwide box office had “Bob Marley: One Love” also doing well rising to $120 million at the worldwide box office after only 12 days. The romantic comedy “Anyone But You” is still holding strong passing $200 million worldwide which makes it the highest grossing R rated romantic comedy since the Bridget Jones sequel “Bridget Jones Baby” back in 2016 and it’s also higher than the recent PG-13 rated romantic comedies. The award winning “Poor Things” is doing fairly well approaching a worldwide gross of $100 million.
Oddly enough, the current domestic box office for 2024 so far (not including movies released in 2023) has “Mean Girls” at #1, “Bob Marley: One Love” at #2, and “The Beekeeper” at #3. For the worldwide box office it’s the other way around. “The Beekeeper” is #1, “Bob Marley: One Love” is #2, “Mean Girls” is #3. 2 of the 3 top movies are from Paramount. Maybe if the concentrated more on their movie releases they wouldn’t need to lay off staff.
SEQUEL/REBOOT/SPINOFF/ETC NEWS: Sony Pictures just announced they’re shifting the untitled “Bad Boys 4” movie up one week from June 14 to June 7 so they won’t be opening against “Inside Out 2”. Moving up one week means they’ll be opening against the reboot of “The Crow” (which jumped to that release date last week after they postponed the John Wick spinoff movie “Ballerina” to 2025 due to reshoots). I guess Sony thinks the movie will do better against “The Crow” reboot.
They just released the trailer for “Horizon: An American Saga” which Kevin Costner directed, co-wrote, and stars in. The trailer implies that there may be more than 2 movies since it lists “Chapter 1” will be released in theaters in June 2024 and then “Chapter 2” will be released in August 2024. Calling them chapters makes it seem like there could be more movies – maybe in theaters or maybe on MAX – in the future.
AWARD NEWS: This past Saturday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards most of the people and movies that have already won several awards won again. “Oppenheimer” won best ensemble cast (the Screen Actors Guild version of best movie), Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Best Supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr. Best actress went to Lily Gladstone for “Killers of the Flower Moon”, and best supporting actress was Da’vine Joy Randolph for “The Holdovers”. Then on Sunday, “Oppenheimer” won best picture at the Producers Guild Awards.
Also, the television awards were pretty much the same winners as the Golden Globes and the Emmy Awards. At this rate, it might be easier to group all the unions, critics, academys, and other awards show into one HUGE award show since the same people have won almost all the awards recently. It’s pretty much a lock that the same people or movies will win at the Academy Awards in 2 weeks.
OTHER NEWS: The UK just changed a movie rating for an old movie. They changed the rating for “Mary Poppins” from U (which would equal a G rating in the US) to PG due to “discriminatory language”. It might be a good idea for the US ratings to consider. Especially movies released before the “PG-13” rating was added that should probably be rated “PG-13” (like the original “Jaws”).
Today, Disney announced that their head of live action movies – Sean Bailey – will be leaving the company and David Greenbaum – the former co-president of Fox Searchlight – will now be the head of Disney Live Action movies AND 20 Century Studio movies. The new title WON’T be replacing the president of 20th Century Studios Steve Asbell but Steve will now be reporting to David. The former co-president of Fox Searchlight will now be the only president. What’s funny is that Sean Bailey first worked with Disney as a producer of the 2010 movie “Tron Legacy” and now he will be a producer on “Tron Ares” (which is currently in production and may be released in 2025) before he moves on to other things.
LITTLE BIT OF HUMOR:

There are a few movies that kept an improvised line or scene. There was originally supposed to be an extended fight scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” but Harrison Ford wasn’t feeling well that day. Instead of shooting, Indiana Jones just shoots him.
