saidi’s take – 8/15/2023

Hello everyone,

In the domestic box office, “Barbie” is still leading the way with $33 million which makes it’s domestic total now $526 million which is only approx. $50 million less than the #1 “Super Mario Bros Movie”.  There is a strong chance it will eventually be the #1 domestic movie of 2023 but it will take a couple weeks at least.  It’s declining about 35-40% per week and there’s another Warner Bros movie – “Blue Beetle” – opening next weekend which will probably take a lot of the premium format theaters away from “Barbie” so by the end of next weekend I think it will still be about $10-15 million below the #1 movie of 2023.

“Oppenheimer” made it back to the #2 spot this past weekend with $18 million.  Its domestic total is now $264 million which makes it the #7 movie of 2023 in the domestic box office.  It’s just behind the 2023 box office of “Avatar: Way of the Water” which is at $283 million.  It’s also expected to lose some screens next weekend because of the Universal release “Strays” will take some of its screens.  However, it looks like it will keep running on some of the theaters showing it in IMAX 70mm this weekend.  However, a lot of the theaters NOT showing it on film will change to “Blue Beetle”.

The new wide release of this past weekend – “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” didn’t do so well.  It came in at #5 with $6.5 million.  Next weekend, the new releases “Blue Beetle” and “Strays” are expected to do much better next weekend – possibly coming in at #1 and #2 in next weekends box office.

Overall, this past weekend domestic total was $118 million which is about 76% better than the same weekend last year.

Worldwide, “Barbie” also did very well making $45 million in foreign countries which makes its international total approx. $660 million and its WORLDWIDE total at an astounding $1.18 billion.  However, beating the #1 “Super Mario Bros Movie” in the worldwide box office will be much harder than the domestic.  It’s trailing the #1 worldwide box office by $170 million.  Since it only made $45 million internationally, it will take a while to make up that $120 million difference in foreign countries.  Personally, I don’t think it will pass it.

Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” is still doing pretty good in international countries.  Its worldwide total is now $648 million which makes it the #6 movie of 2023 worldwide.

Two weeks ago (Fri Aug 4th), the WGA and the studios met to try to start negotiating a new contract again.  Reportedly, that meeting was very short that day, but according to reports there was a 2nd meeting this past Friday (Aug 11) which made more progress.  The studios gave the WGA their new proposal.  No information about the proposal was revealed but the WGA said they’re reviewing the proposal and will respond with their own proposal sometime soon (probably this week).

Also, to show more support for the WGA, the Screen Actors Guild modified which independent movies got waivers so they can continue filming while the strike is happening.  In the modified rules, any movie that is also under the WGA contract are not allowed to receive a waiver to continue filming.

Little bit of humor….

Not just Marvel movies.  I often see people waiting to see if there is an additional scene during the end credits for ANY movie.  People were waiting for the end credits to finish in “Oppenheimer”.  What kind of sequel would that movie have????
