saidi’s take – 6/15/2023

Hello everyone,

  • Before the weekend some people were predicting that last weeks “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” might be competing with “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” for the #1 spot this weekend, but “Transformers” beat expectations with a $61 million opening weekend.  “Spider Man” was #2 with $55 million.

Another funny thing that happened over the weekend is that “The Machine” and “About My Father” just passed $10 million (YES, ONLY $10 MILLION) this past weekend after 3 weeks in theaters.  “The Machine” made $576 thousand for a total of $10.09 million and “About My Father” made $837 thousand for a total of about $10.75 million.

  • Worldwide “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” also did well with a worldwide total of $171 million.  It did very well in China where it made $40 million which is the 2nd highest opening in China this year so far.  Also, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” now has a worldwide total of $390 million so in a little over a week it has already passed the total worldwide gross of the first movie “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”.
  • A lot of people are commenting about the trouble that next weekends “The Flash” is having promoting the movie.  They don’t want Ezra Miller to do any press due to his past legal troubles.  Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck are both busy filming movies.  So, the only people they have left is newcomer Sasha Calle (who hasn’t had any lead roles previously) who plays Supergirl and Michael Shannon who plays General Zod but who is also busy promoting his directorial debut movie “Eric Larue” which played this past weekend at the Tribecca Film Festival.  Ezra appeared at the world premiere of the movie today but didn’t talk to press.
  • The Hollywood Foreign Press is apparently going to be disbanded.  Today Dick Clark Productions announced they have purchased all the rights to the Golden Globe awards and they will also take over the charities that the Hollywood Foreign Press use to run.  They haven’t announced who will vote for the nominees and winners of the Golden Globe awards yet.
  • According to internet rumors, they just finished “Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1” (which is good since it comes out in about a month) but they’re having problems with Part 2 currently scheduled to be released next summer.  Unofficial reports say that the movie may be on hold due to the writers strike and possible actors strike that could start at the end of this month.
  • Speaking of the possible actors strike.  Some people are starting to worry about how they’re going to promote the summer movies coming out in July and August if the actors go on strike.  One of the provisions of the strike will be that actors are forbidden from doing press for movies.  Some studios are considering pre-taping interviews with the stars of the movie coming in July now so they can air closer to the movies release date.  There’s also the big Comic Con in July which might not have any actors in attendance this year if the strike happens.

Little bit of humor…

A small popcorn is around $7.  You should ask for a quarter for every time someone complained.  You might be able to upgrade to a soda/popcorn combo.
